Computing Challenges in Intelligent Transportation Systems

Speaker: Ouri Wolfson, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago

Abstract: In this talk I will describe applications, research issues, and Information Technology approaches related to Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). I will focus on urban transportation, and discuss novel applications enabled by mobile wireless software systems. Such applications have the potential of making a sea change in transportation by improving safety, mobility, environmental impact, and energy efficiency of the vehicles on the road network. The applications are based on vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, and they are strongly related to ITS efforts currently undertaken throughout the world, particularly the IntelliDrive initiative of the US Department of Transportation.

Biography: Ouri Wolfson is currently the Richard and Loan Hill Professor of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and an Affiliate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He is the founder of Mobitrac, a high-tech startup specializing in advanced fleet management software; it was acquired by Fluensee Co. in 2006. Most recently he founded Pirouette Software Inc., and currently serves as its President. Ouri Wolfson authored over 160 publications, and holds six patents. He is a Fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a University of Illinois Scholar for 2009, and serves on the editorial boards of the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, Springer's Wireless Networks Journal, J. Ross Publishing Transportation Letters: The International Journal of Transportation Research, Journal of Spatial Information Science. He received the best paper award for "Opportunistic Resource Exchange in Inter-vehicle Ad Hoc Networks", at the 2004 Mobile Data Management Conference. He served as a Distinguished Lecturer for the Association of Computing Machinery during 2001-2003, and participated in numerous conferences as a keynote speaker, program committee chairman or member, tutorial presenter, session chairman, and panelist. Most recently he was the general chair of the 17th ACM SIGSPATIAL International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information Systems (ACM GIS 2009) . His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), NATO, US Army, NASA, the New York State Science and Technology Foundation, Hughes Research Laboratories, Informix Co., Accenture Co., and Hitachi Co. Most recently, he is the Principal Investigator on a $3.1M NSF grant to establish a Ph.D. program in the new discipline of Computational Transportation Science.

Event Processing on Mobile Phones: Mobile 3.0?

Speaker: Archan Misra, Senior Scientist, Telcordia Technologies

Abstract: With Mobile 2.0 defined by the integration of the social web and the use of cloud-mediated mashup applications, this talk explores a vision for the "next big" paradigm for mobile computing applications. I will discuss the opportunities and challenges around the transformation of the mobile device into a combined "sensing and analytics" platform, distinguished by two key features: a) efficient processing of locally available sensor data streams and b) localized coordination and distributed computation among a set of proximal mobile nodes. The talk will cover some of my related ongoing work on middleware for intelligent context determination, efficient query processing and distributed event extraction on individual or groups of mobile phones.

Biography: Archan Misra is currently a Senior Researcher at Telcordia Technologies, where he leads research in areas related to pervasive computing middleware, high-performance cognitive wireless networks and smart grids. He has published extensively in the areas of pervasive computing and wireless networks and is a co-author on papers that received the Best Paper awards in EUC 2008, ACM WOWMOM 2002 and IEEE MILCOM 2001. He is presently on the editorial board of the Journal of Pervasive and Mobile Computing and had chaired the IEEE Computer Society's Technical Committee on Computer Communications (TCCC) from 2005-2007. Archan holds a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park.
