"Experimentation for the Internet of Things"

Prof. Dr. Mesut Günes, Distributed, embedded Systems (DES), Freie Universität Berlin, Berlin, Germany

Abstract

A lot of experimental facilities were setup in recent years to study wireless networks in a more realistic environment. Among these are also facilities for the study of wireless multi-hop networks (i.e., WSN, WMN, MANET), which are considered as enabling infrastructure for the future Internet of Things (IoT). In this talk we will review the development of empirical research in wireless networks of the recent years, discuss their experimentation approach, and draw lessons for future empirical research in this field.

Biography

Mesut Güneş received a diploma degree in Computer Science from RWTH Aachen University, Germany in 1998 and a Ph.D. in 2004. From 2004-2005 he was a research fellow at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI), Berkeley, USA. Since 2007 he is a professor for Computer Science and the head of the Distributed, Embedded Systems (DES) group at the institute of computer science at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. His research interests include distributed communication systems, multimedia communication, internet of things (IoT), wired and wireless computer networks, particularly wireless sensor networks, wireless mesh networks, and mobile ad-hoc networks. Mesut Güneş is involved in several national and international research projects in the mentioned areas.

"The Key Role of Latin American Operators and Governments in the Future Internet: Prototyping and Transfering the Emergent Technologies from the Academy+R&D to the Industry"

**Prof. Alfonso Ehijo, Universidad de Chile, Santiago de Chile, Chile**

Abstract

The Operators approach to Prototype. Open versus Vendor specific Testbeds.

  • Example of 20 MUS$ of Vendors Specific Labs: A Latin American Reference Center based at the University of Chile.
  • Example of Open Labs. The actual and planed Open Labs at UdeChile as member of UNIFI: Open IMS, Open EPC, Open MTC all from FOKUS.

The Governments approach to Technology Transfer. Excellence Centers and the Universities.

  • Models vs Reality in the Technology Transfer arena.
  • 4 Examples of TT via Excellence Centers in Chile:

a) ICT = INRIA-Chile and a 9 Universities federation.

b) BioTech = Fraunhofer and a 5 Universities consortium

c) Mining = CSIRO and UdeChile.

d) Food = Wageningen and a 5 Universities consortium

Innovation Projects and Funding Alternatives in Latin America.

  • Is the Academy solving the right equation? The fears and apprehension of the Industry.
  • Example of a Convergent Operator funding Innovation Projects.
  • The importance of the Reference&Competence Centers. Education and Training are key factors for a sustainable project.

"Testbed for Evaluating Quality-of-Experience in IMS-based Mobile IPTV"

Prof.Nguyen Huu Thanh, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hanoi, Vietnam

Abstract

Vietnam, now a day, has successfully transformed its telecom infrastructure to all-IP platform. Since 2004, it managed to convert its entire core network from TDM-based systems to NGN Soft-switch architecture and now phasing a new challenge of the new multimedia and content services offered. Amongst others, IMS is chosen by operators in Vietnam as a promising technology to address this new challenge. The talk is divided into two parts. In the first part, current status of the Vietnam’s telecommunication and digital content industry will be discussed, which are the motivation to our IMS testbed as the infrastructure for service development and prototyping. In the second part of the talk, the HUST IMS testbed will be addressed, which is the facility to research and develop new infrastructure for multimedia services, especially IPTV. The talk will also focus on IMS-based IPTV testbed and QoE measurements on this IPTV network. Our aim is to explore the potential links between IMS-based IPTV user experience and the networked service delivery, and to pave the way for service providers to ensure the competitive quality and identify related service optimization approaches.
